About This Course

In this course you will explore the Watching Videos Like a Historian Toolkit, a resource designed to help educators integrate audiovisual cultural heritage materials into their teaching. This toolkit supports innovative and dynamic approaches to history education, fostering critical thinking, historical understanding, and media literacy among students.

NOTE: This course is still in beta and has not gone through user tests yet. Changes to the course structure and/or material can be made as long as it is in beta.


Learning goals

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Learn how to effectively use audiovisual sources in the classroom.
  • Develop strategies to enrich students’ engagement with history in a critical way using audiovisual resources.
  • Blend traditional and digital learning resources to create transformative educational experiences.

The Watching Videos Like a Historian Toolkit was co-created by education professionals, collection holders, media experts, and heritage organizations as part of the Watching Videos Like a Historian project, funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.


Who is this course for?

  • History and Social Studies Teachers looking to enhance students' critical thinking and historical understanding through audiovisual sources.
  • Educators in Primary, Secondary, and Higher Education seeking innovative ways to incorporate digital and multimedia materials into lessons.
  • Cultural Heritage Professionals, Museum Educators and other non-formal educators using historical audiovisual content to create engaging learning experiences.

Requirements

  • A computer with a display of 1920 *1080 pixels minimum.
  • At least 120 minutes of your time to complete this course. The course could take more time depending on the exercises you choose to do

Steven Stegers

Steven Stegers is the Executive Director of EuroClio, the European Association of History Educators. At EuroClio, he has developed and coordinated international projects to enhance history and citizenship education since 2006, working mainly in Europe, but also in Central Asia, Northeast Asia and the Middle East. He has been an advisor for the Council of Europe, the Global Centre for Pluralism, the European Commission, the International Baccalaureate, KAICIID Dialogue Centre and the OSCE HCNM. He has coordinated the development of the award winning Historiana platform, which is designed for and with educators to promote quality history, heritage, and citizenship education. He is an honorary fellow of the Historical Association.

Ivan Milovanov

Ivan Milovanov joined EuroClio as the Professional Development Coordinator and Project Manager in December 2023, bringing his expertise in non-formal educational design and a BSc in Psychology. He leads L&D projects, offline and online events including EuroClio’s Annual Conference, and the Historiana platform. Previously, Ivan's notable contributions as an entrepreneur include co-developing the 4M Storytelling method, which integrates visible storytelling with collaborative design, educational city walking tours focused on history and remembrance, and contributing to Stories that Move, a blended-learning platform. His approach to creating learning experiences blends innovation, psychology, and playful storytelling, with a focus on active citizenship, democratic values, critical thinking, history, emergent technology, and environmental and economic sustainability.
