Planning XR projects for cultural heritage

Europeana

Recommended prior course

Completion of Introduction to XR for Cultural Heritage is strongly recommended, if you are new to XR concepts such as AR, MR, VR or to the EUreka3D-XR ecosystem. If you already have a basic understanding of these concepts, you can begin this course directly.

About this course

This course guides you through the practical process of planning an Extended Reality (XR) project for cultural heritage.

If you completed the introductory course on XR for cultural heritage, you have already explored the foundations of AR, MR, and VR, the EUreka3D-XR ecosystem and toolbox and real-world cultural heritage applications, including the Girona, Bibracte, and Paphos case studies.

This course builds on that foundation by moving from understanding XR to planning, designing, launching and sustaining an XR project. Rather than focusing only on theory, you will apply a structured XR roadmap to develop your own XR Project Plan.

Throughout the course, each module contributes a new section to your XR Project Plan, helping you move from an initial concept to a realistic plan for designing, testing, launching and sustaining an XR experience.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for:

  • Cultural heritage professionals who want to plan or manage XR initiatives.
  • Project managers and coordinators working on XR projects.
  • Educators and researchers interested in applying XR to cultural heritage contexts.
  • Anyone with existing XR knowledge who wants to focus on practical project planning and delivery.

What you will learn

By completing this course, you will learn how to:

  • define the goals, objectives and scope of an XR project;
  • identify audiences and design accessible, user-centred XR experiences around their needs and user scenarios;
  • select appropriate XR technologies, delivery methods, and tools based on audience needs, user scenarios and project constraints;
  • plan resources, stakeholders, risks, and constraints;
  • design, prototype and test an XR experience;
  • prepare a project for publication, dissemination and launch;
  • develop a long-term sustainability plan for maintenance, updates and institutional continuity.

What you will achieve

This course is designed around a practical outcome. By the end of the course, you will have produced an XR Project Plan that can be used to:

  • communicate your project to colleagues or managers;
  • support discussions with project partners;
  • contribute to funding or development proposals;
  • guide decisions about the development, launch and long-term management of an XR experience within your organisation.
